IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT TRAFFIC SAFETY It is very important that all families follow the school traffic safety rules around the school. We have noticed the following unacceptable traffic practices at our school drop-off points:
We do not want to endanger any students, so we ask that you follow the school traffic pattern located in your Welby Way Handbook and below. Traffic moves in a clockwise direction only around the school. When driving in your car, make sure that the school is always on your right side. |

There are designated areas to drop-off your child for school and pick up your child from school depending on their grade level. You can stop your car in the adjacent loading zone, but you must stay in your car. In the morning, please drop off your child(ren) at the appropriate loading gate, then safely and quickly move out of the loading zone. In the afternoon, please have your child(ren) quickly proceed to the appropriate loading gate so you can pick them up and move off safely and quickly.
It is illegal to commit any of the following:
Fail to come to a full stop at a stop sign
Leave a car unattended in a loading zone from 7 A.M. to 5 P.M. on school days
Jaywalk (dangerous and sets a bad example to the children)
Make a u-turn or a three-point-turn involving a driveway
Double-park (even for a moment-children can be killed moving between two cars to get into a double-parked car)
Park in the staff parking lot
Enter the school through the staff parking lot
Walk through the staff parking lot
Visitors may park on the street. Please obey all parking signs, as cars illegally parked may be ticketed.
Bicycle Permits
Bicycle permits are issued to children in grades 3 through 5 who wish to ride their bicycles to school. Permits are kept on file in the school office. Students are to walk their bikes on and off of the playground and keep their bikes locked while parked in the bicycle racks. ALL STUDENTS RIDING THEIR BIKES MUST WEAR HELMETS. RIDING OF SCOOTERS, OR SKATEBOARDS TO SCHOOL OR ON SCHOOL PREMISES IS NOT PERMITTED.
Walking to SchoolIf your child walks to school, select a safe, regular route for him/her to use to and from school. Do not permit your child to cross mid-block or between parked cars. Crossing guards are stationed at Vanowen Street and Lederer Avenue during the following times:
7:00 A.M. - 8:40 A.M.
10:50 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.
2:00 P.M. - 3:15 P.M.Students may not enter the campus via the staff parking lots.
Your cooperation with these important safety rules is appreciated.
TRAFFIC SAFETY VOLUNTEER PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES
1. Just prior to the start of your Traffic Safety shift, go to the Welby Way office, check-in, and get an orange vest. (If you have Student Traffic Safety Volunteers assigned to your gate, get a vest for each student).
2. Proceed to your assigned gate.
3. Direct cars to pull forward to unload students. (Students may assist by holding signs). You may open the door but please do not step off the curb. IF YOU SEE A DOG IN THE CAR, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR - ASK THE PARENT/DRIVER TO EXIT THE VEHICLE AND ASSIST THEIR CHILD IN EXITING THE VEHICLE!
4. Only 2 to 3 cars should be unloading at one time.
5. Remind pedestrians to use the crosswalks (for the children's safety and to set a positive example for the children).
6. Remind cars to not double-park to drop off/pick up their children. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. They must pull up behind the other cars, stay in line, and wait their turn to load/unload.
7. Please do not attempt to direct street traffic like a police officer. Stay near your assigned gate and motion for cars to come forward to stop so their student may exit.
8. If you have Student Traffic Safety Volunteers, remind them to be courteous and friendly. They may assist in opening car doors to help students exit their vehicle, BUT they may not step off the curb to open car doors. STUDENT TRAFFIC SAFETY VOLUNTEERS MUST STAY ON THE CURB/SIDEWALK.
9. We realize that a few parents may be rude and argumentative. Please keep a positive attitude and remain calm and friendly. Remind these people that these rules are for the safety of the children, and that the police can ticket violators. In these cases, you can state something like “Next time please follow the rules” or "I'm sorry, but our rules prohibit you from parking here. Please park your vehicle in a regular parking zone if you would like to leave your vehicle." If you have an adult who is consistently rude, or refuses to follow the rules, please notify the school office.
10. If you work at the back gate or Kindergarten gate, please lock those gates when you leave at 8:10 AM. Please return all vests to the office after your shift is completed.
Welby Way Student Traffic Safety Volunteer Rules
Grades 4-5 Only
(written parental permission is required for participation)
1. Student Traffic Safety Volunteers will follow the directions of the adult Traffic Safety Volunteer and school personnel.
2. Student Traffic Safety Volunteers will arrive at the correct location and on-time for their volunteer shift.
3. Student Traffic Safety Volunteers will stay on the sidewalk/curb while assisting students out of their vehicles, and will NOT step into the street at any time. If a vehicle is too far from the curb to safely open the door, Student Traffic Safety Volunteers should ask their adult Traffic Safety Volunteer to assist.
4. If a Student Traffic Safety Volunteer sees a dog in the vehicle, they are not to open the vehicle door and should ask the parent/driver to exit the vehicle and assist their child in exiting the vehicle.
5. Student Traffic Safety Volunteers may be asked to hold a sign, which they should use responsibly per directions.
6. Student Traffic Safety Volunteers must pay attention to the vehicles and traffic at all times and cannot socialize while performing their duty.
7. Student Traffic Safety Volunteers assigned to the morning shift should collect their belongings when the first bell rings, return the Traffic Safety vest to the adult volunteer, and proceed to their class.
THANKS TO OUR TRAFFIC SAFETY VOLUNTEERS FOR MAKING THIS IMPORTANT PROGRAM POSSIBLE!
